1.) Empathy: Empathy is defined as an emotional reaction that is similar to the reaction being experienced by another person (134). In other words, it is when you “put yourself in another person’s shoes”, and see things from their point of view by having the same emotional reaction as them. For example, when my friend told me her dog had passed away, I felt sad because that is how she felt. In the movie we watched in class, Emotional Intelligence, it was discussed that empathy is the most important EI skills. It is difficult to understand your own feelings sometimes, let alone those of someone else, so having that ability is a crucial part of emotional intelligence. In the video it was said that empathy is important because it is what keeps us from harming others. An example given was a murderer who when interviewed said that the only reason he was able to kill his victims was because he couldn’t connect with what they were feeling. If he had any empathy, he wouldn’t have been able to do it.

The book definition of this is: The ability to be aware of, to understand, and to manage one’s own emotions and those of other people (140). I think this correlates well to what we learned in the video. This is important because emotions effect our everyday lives and interactions with others. In the video, the statistic was given that 80-90% of our career success is decided by emotional intelligence, this is because thoughts come after feelings. Usually, we feel a certain way about something that has happened and only after we calm down, do we think about it rationally. In order to be successful as a professional, you need to be able to handle your emotions
