In today’s world there are many incurable diseases where people suffer great pain. Technology and medicine has been able to allow patients to get palliative care, instead of helping them to kill themselves. So should physicians, be allowed by law to assist people who want to end their lives by prescribing them with lethal medicine. This topic has become very controversial where some people believe that this procedure puts the terminally ill at peace and retains the dignity of the patients. However, assisted suicide should not be legalized because it is unlawful and nobody truly knows when they are going to die.

With assisted suicide people who are very ill would have the option to end their life. But how do you know that you are going pass on. “All of us in the cancer care have seen patients, diagnosed with a so-called terminal illness, who have experience a marvelous remission of the disease” (Dreisbach). It is unknown when it’s the correct time to receive the pills, because nobody knows when their time is up. Even though the procedure was passed in the state of California saying that the drugs would be allowed to patients who have six months or less to live. When a patient is given a prognosis it is always an approximation, it is never 100 percent accurate. Also everybody’s situation is different, so there is not specific course of action that a practitioner could follow. “Though both advocates and opponents of doctor aided death call California legalization a big-step either forward or backward for medical care, experts predict that it would probably be marginalized practice within the healthcare system, with few patients asking for lethal medications and a few doctors furnishing them” ( Karlamangla). The process of assisted suicide is a very precarious and risky act. Even though many people have valid reason for passing it the cons usually overrule them.
