The Civil War began when the South would not agree to abolish slavery and departed from the United States. There are several beliefs of what started the war but, no one will never know what really happened. The Civil War was fought in many places and lasted five very long years. Even when the war was over there were still little battles and skirmishes. Did you know that over 56,000 people died in prison camps because of diseases and starvation. Over 40 percent of the men who died in the Civil War were unknown. Amputation was the key surgery provided to soldiers for broken or severely wounded limbs. Cannons - they played a very big part in this war. The cannons went all the way from six pound balls to 24 pound balls. One of the most important technological cannons at this time was the rifled barrel cannon, which increased range and accuracy, due to engraved swirls to create less of a wind change in the momentum. Smoothbore cannons fell in two slots: guns and howitzers. They fired at shorter ranges and less accuracy because they did not have they engraved swirl. Rifles - this war made many advancements in gun technology. Such as revolving rifles or guns that could shoot more than one at a time. For instance, the Colt Revolving Rifle and the Mini Ball. This ammunition changed the Civil War. It had much better accuracy than a lead ball and had more knock down power. It was also named after its co-developer “Claude-Étienne Minié”. Double Barrel Cannon was made in the spring of 1862 by John Gilliland. He made it primarily for a chain shot which he tried out in April 1862. The shots were supposed to be fired simultaneously but, they shot one after the other which made them go flying in other directions. Now lets get a little deeper into the attire... the Civil War Zouaves - they originated from North Africa wearing bright colors, baggy pantaloons, bright turbans and a very fezzed up hat. They also became one of the most elite fighting forces in the French Army of Algeria. The militia units were known to try and copy their odd looking uniforms. Early in the war (both sides) had volunteer militias devise a fancy uniform as they marched to battle. For this it meant both sides suiting up like the Zouave fighters. The Zouave were more like the North African Fighter. For example they used: smaller or lighter infantry, faster reloading, a faster pace than just walking in a straight line and prone firing/reloading. The war went on, bit by bit the Zouave just started dissapearing. This was because the uniforms cost too much to make and had insufficient funds.
