Trump and Birth Control
Since the 1960’s when the pill came on the scene. Birth control has been a controversial topic. Men and women have sought to prevent other women from using birth control based primarily on religion. However, most women want to be able to choose when the time is right for them to have a child and for that birth control is essential to allowing them the freedom to choose. In many cases the need to control women by controlling their access to birth control goes all the way to the federal government. The federal government determines what types of birth control are allowed on the market and who has access to them. This is because Republicans believe that it is their responsibility to control the reproductive rights and freedom of women. However, they also want to cut funding from programs that can help prevent pregnancies and programs that aid new mothers, such as WIC. The move to defund Planned Parenthood started before Trump came to office and with Trump’s position on the organization it does not look as though he will be going against the Republican agenda on the issue. He has said that while it helps “millions and millions of women” he still wants to defund it “because of the abortion factor” (Trump quoted by Rinkunas, 2016). Even if Trump decides to make these changes, they would not be implemented on plans that were already bought for 2017. This is why many women were rushing to sign up for insurance before the beginning of 2017. This has also led a rise in the number of women going to Planned parenthood to get long term birth control, such as hormonal implants and IUD’s. The Republicans overturning Roe vs. Wade will not change this. Women have been terminating their pregnancies since the dawn of time using a variety of techniques, including plants and herbs, coat hangers, accidents and small doses of poison, etc. Trying to keep women barefoot and pregnant will not work out the way that the Republicans envision because the number of abortions will increase and so will the number of women dying as a result of inducing miscarriages or having illegal abortions performed. As far as buying birth control over-the-counter, this is something that I support, but restrictions against price gauging are needed. Plus, since all women will not be able to afford the cost of buying birth control without a prescription, it needs to still be covered under insurance for low income
