Will Lacrosse Be More Diverse? Lacrosse is a rapidly growing sport across the country, but it largely remains a dominate white sport. According to the most recent N.C.A.A Study only about 1.9% of the division is African American leaving the other 98.1 all the other races, (mostly white). A majority of the teams have one to two players that are white but there are teams, like Cornell, that still have all white players. Players like Kyle Harrison, on Team STX and the Ohio Machine, are one of the very few player that are African in the MLL. Although it has not reached its peak popularity yet, lacrosse will become a very diverse sport and more popular when MLL players get paid more, and when gear becomes more affordable for teams. If you look at a sport like football it can be VERY expensive with gear, an average helmet can be around $250.00, shoulder pads can be from $100 to $150, and then add rib guards and leg pads which will add up to around $100. That’s a lot for gear and most if not all high schools have football, but the way they’ll be able to get away with it is by gradually acquiring gear from fundraisers. That’s how most of the schools got most of there gear for football so they could do that for schools and club teams. As long as the gear gets cheaper and demand for the sport goes up there will be lacrosse across the country at every school. If it becomes that accessible it’ll become a very diverse sport making the sport open to everyone.
