Arguments Against Abortion

The topic of abortion is a current and growing controversy around the globe but also specifically New Zealand. The more secular argument is pro-choice, and that under certain circumstances, abortion is not only acceptable, but a recommendation. The traditional Catholic Church has a different perspective on it. Abortion is an ethical issue because there can be arguments formed on either side, and focusing on the Catholic Church’s beliefs will show a different outlook to this issue than most. This topic is under the blanket rule that it is wrong to murder, from the First Commandment. Within this, the Church believes that life starts at the moment of conception; therefore this life must be respected. They also believe it’s wrong to kill the innocent, and as abortion is purposely terminating a pregnancy, this is a prime example. There is a foundation of teachings such as the Bible, Catechisms and Pope Francis’ Encyclicals that they base their beliefs on.

God gave humans the freedom, which has resulted in wars and conflict. Although the Pope does say that God, being the loving and merciful God he is, will forgive a repenting heart, alongside this he still emphasises that abortion is sin. In Galatians 6:7 it says “Do don’t be deceived. God cannot be mocked. Whatever a man sows, he will reap.” Just because God will forgive the wrong doings of an individual doesn’t justify their actions, otherwise this will mean that murder can be justified if the assailant repents. The Catholic Church is cautious around this topic for this reason, as it would give people the permission and freedom to commit crimes and sin, fully aware that they can be
