Did you know that the United States of America has dropped 13 places from 18th to 31st in the world ranking for math in 2009? In 2011 Arne Duncan, the Secretary of Education, stated, “...almost 82% of U.S schools were failing by the end of 2012.” The main cause of the drop in ranking is due to standardized testing. School systems force students to take biased standardized tests that judges them based on their scores rather than their intellectual capabilities, creativity, and abstract ideas. As a result, top universities accept students mainly for their test scores rather than truly seeing a student’s growth. They are not properly used to measure the growth of students and stress students to the point where they are sacrificing their personal learning in order to get a certain grade on an exam. According to Barack Obama, “School districts use no more than 2% of class time.” He believes that teachers use too much instructional time to get students ready for tests which is taking time away to actually learn the material required and designed for the courses. In order to solve this issue, Obama calls to reduce the amount of testing there is in schools in order for each and every student to learn all the material needed instead of focusing on tests and preparation. The National Education Association (NEA) proposed to congress to change the way schools deal with testing to limit the amount of tests taken in elementary and middle schools in order to eliminate stress and increase student progress. They proposed on improving the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act to give more time for a quality education and rather than wasting time preparing students for tests. Students think that they need to receive good scores on tests which leads to massive amounts of test anxiety.“The New York Performance Standards Consortium, an alliance of 28 public high schools, use performance based assessments in place of standardized exams.” The New York Performance Standards Consortium created a new and innovative way to measure student growth without added stress and nervousness and reduce wasting classroom time. In addition, there are many instances of where we see minority graduation rates improving immensely.“In 2011, 86% of African American and 90% of Latino Americans, graduates of the Consortium schools, were accepted to college. National averages are only 37% and 43%, respectively. 93 % of consortium graduates remain enrolled in four year colleges after the first two years, compared with an average of 81% nationally.” The consortium alternative of standardized testing in high schools has shown dramatic improvements of college acceptances and graduation rates of minorities in New York.
