Present an argument for or against the existence of God
In this essay, I will argue against the existence of God. To support my own argument, I will present and examine arguments for the problem of evil. The problem of evil is extensively considered to be the most powerful argument against the existence of God and a great obstacle to one’s faith.
The problem of evil is concerned with the fact that God is traditionally understood to be supremely good, omnipotent and omniscient. Since evil does exist in the world, it causes problems for the belief in a supremely, good God. This is centred around the argument that firstly, if God is supremely good, then he has the desire to eliminate evil. Secondly, if God is omnipotent, then he can eliminate evil. Thirdly, if God is omniscient, then he knows that evils does exist and knows how to eliminate it. Therefore, it is argued that if God does exist, and is supremely good, omnipotent, and omniscient, then evil does not exist. However, evil does exist. Thus, a supremely good, omnipotent, and omniscient God does not exist.
