Back to the Future directed by Robert Zemeckis, is a film trailer exploring a time travelling extravaganza. The protagonist Marty McFly accompanied by Dr. Emmett Brown was sent back to 1995 where he meets his parents in high school and accidentally becomes his mother’s romantic interest. Both these characters work together to reverse the time, as well as help Marty’s parents fall back in love to uphold the present. Inside man, directed by Spike Lee is a film based on a 24 hour bank heist in the heart of Wall Street. In Back to the Future, the narration used enabled the viewers to engage in the film, and allow intricate perspective of the storyline. This further establishes the credibility of the characters, as it draws the attention of the audience into the complications of the film. The narration is seen commentating on the different stages of the film trailer, “Marty lives an ordinary life” as seen in the opening scene. Further narration ranges from heavy to comedic references. This engages the audience by enabling them to feel involved in the story along with the characters. In contrast, the film trailer Inside Man introduced the narration through the form of dialogue, where the characters converse with one another which creates credibility to the characters. This is a representation of a 21st century film juxtaposed to Back to the Future which was produced in 1985 where the narrator informs the audience about the premise, this is an example of how film trailers have developed over time. The discrepancy between Inside Man and Back to the Future is the narration, as it demonstrates a more thriller sense through the scenes. The comedic aspect of the film can be seen where light is used in different colours such as yellow and orange to symbolise enjoyment and enthusiasm which conveys the humour in each scene. Moreover, the use of dark light has been used to depict the complications, as well as highlight the mysteriousness and unknown factors of the fantasy genre. Furthermore, the use of dark lighting enables the captivation of the audience’s attention where necessary. The differences in light renders the importance of a scene, which enables the audience to gauge the progression of the film trailer. Moreover, with the reoccurrence of these lighting effects, it further reinforces the plot and purpose of the film trailer to the audience. Inside Man utilises light through the negative aspect, drawing in the audience as if they are experiencing each sequence as it goes. Similarly, the dark lighting has been used to convey the story line, and foreshadow the future events would be thrilling and intriguing to the audience. The colour of light illustrates the dramatic feel of the film trailer, which diffuses these senses into the audience, evidently seen when the film trailer reaches its climax. This relates
