Introduction
Is the University of Arkansas an elite/prestigious Institution of Higher Education?
The realm of higher education is extremely competitive. Today’s day and age the objective is to reach the masses, or as Peter D. Eckel puts it “massification” (2008). It has lead to greater competition due to the variety of institutions and approaches to higher education (2008). The diverse options present a challenge to institutions, like the University of Arkansas, one that causes them to compete for students while still trying to maintain a high standing.

It can also show achievement and prestige through its classification. In 2011 The University of Arkansas received the highest possible classification from the Carnegie Foundation. They were classified as a research university with a very high level of research activity (University of Arkansas) 2011. The university was one of 108 institutions out of the nations 4,633 universities and colleges at that time. It is a unique and difficult quality for a prestigious university to have because often times the fight for prestige clashes with the desire to be effective (Eckel 2008). According to Peter D. Eckel in order for an institution to be effective it constitutes their, “ability to deliver one’s mission or goals” (Eckel 2008). The University of Arkansas’ mission is to strive to be “internationally competitive” academically in both graduate and undergraduate levels in various disciplines, promote advancements in learning and help contribute to the economy while still providing students with “research and creative activity” in order to benefit the society and meet its “land-grant mission to serve Arkansas and beyond as a partner, resource, and catalyst.”(University of Arkansas). The Carnigie Classification of being a high-level research university is a prime example of the work the university puts in to not just be prestigious but also effective. The U of A also has a wonderful office called the Volunteer Action Center that provides resources and opportunities for students to volunteer both on campus and in the community (University of Arkansas).
