College Application Essay: The Ivy League, Without The Ivory Tower

Early on when I was doing the firsts of my college-researching I watched a bunch of YouTube videos about schools to get a sense of what they wanted me to take away as my first impression. It was funny to me, because most of the videos may have been different in their details, but most were similar in their message: this is a fine institution where you will learn how to learn, and grow into a questioner and thinker, and make friends, and challenge yourself etc. But one line that stood out most of all was the Experience Penn video saying, “The Ivy League, without the Ivory Tower”—from the moment I hear that, I was hooked. It was refreshing to watch an elite institution playfully poke fun at the Ivy League, and portray exactly what I want in a university; I want to go somewhere with like-minded, hard-working students where I will learn how to learn, becoming a questioner and thinker, make friends, and challenge myself. But I also want to go somewhere where I can explore a new city, partake in spirited traditions, and—for lack of a better way of putting this—have fun. I believe that the College of Arts and Sciences best caters to my desire to specialize in a scientific field but also get a well-rounded education.
I have found myself enjoying every science class I have ever taken; I can attribute my success in these classes to the fact that I liked the subject matter. I even chose to take advantage of having "maxed out" of Lick's Chinese offerings by doubling in sciences this year. I know that I love science and will continue exploring it in college, since I have stayed interested in every science class I've taken, from observational Biology to theoretical Physics.
