College Through A Narrow Lense “At a time when going to college has never been more important, it's never been more expensive, and our nation's families haven't been in this kind of financial duress since the great depression. And so what we have is just sort of a miraculous opportunity simply by stopping the subsidy to banks when we already have the risk of loans. We can plow those savings into our students. And we can make college dramatically more affordable, tens of billions of dollars over the next decade” (Duncan, Arne). Today, American youths are facing a staggering challenge that has gotten harder with time. That challenge is where to go to college. The school has specific guidelines that one must follow when choosing a computer. They recommend that one picks a computer that is either a Mac or a HP computer (Tech Specs). The school also requires that their computer has Microsoft Office on it. The students tend to use Mac computers heavily. On the tour, a protective student could go into the library and see a multitude of students working on their laptops and all of them being Macs (Tour). The teachers are also big Apple product users. That makes the technology familiar to students from Scottsburg. It also adds a sense of comfort and confidence to freshmen students. There is no software that the students are all given for free. On the other hand, there are scholarships that students can win, and they will receive a free laptop from the university (tour). In the classroom, a student may see anything from a chalkboard to a smart board. Technology is useful for the teachers when they are giving a lecture or when students are presenting projects. That being said, the classes are discussion heavy, so students will not always have to use the technology on a day to day basis. This makes DePauw different from Scottsburg, where we are always using our
