The Army today is composed of leaders and followers. Great leaders require abilities that will enable them to train, lead and motivate their followers. Those abilities are called conceptual abilities. What are conceptual abilities? Who do these abilities applies to? Why do leaders need conceptual abilities? How does conceptual abilities affect leaders? When do you need these abilities?

But in today’s standards all five types of thinking are important especially in the military where the adversaries are adaptive and smarter. Military leaders are not all born with the skills and will have to learn from reading doctrines and publications. They should be willing to change directions and strategic goals, force themselves to ponder whether or not they should shift plans. They should not settle for a quick fix. Instead, look at the problem and analyze all possible solutions. They should be helping each other and remind everyone that they are part of the mission and discuss strategies frequently with everyone involved. They should look at the situation from another perspective either from their Soldiers or their past leaders. And they should engage in a “what-if” thinking. Leaders with this ability have special knowledge or education and knows how to apply it in their mentoring and leading techniques. For example, is a leader that is conducting range operations. The leader having domain knowledge on technical aspects will have an advantage over those who don’t. They are the expert in their field and will be suitable on performing the operation teaching and mentoring his/her subordinates in weapon systems. This leader will also know the importance of their equipment and have a bigger picture of the impact it will cause for mishandling such equipment.
