Many great leaders of World War II started in humble beginnings. The leader that has left a legacy far beyond what he could have imagined is Staff Sergeant Audie Murphy. He embodied the characteristics of a great leader in every aspect of his life. Before the war his led his family. During the war he led his fellow Soldiers. After the war he led the discussion about battle fatigue. The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club allows Soldiers to reach for the same excellence.
In 1925 Audie was born into the hard life of share cropping in Texas. His father was abusive and would later abandon the family when Audie was in his early teens. Audie worked hard to provide for his family in his father absence. His hunting skills often provided them with the only food they would eat that day. Despite his best efforts, Audie lost his mother in 1941. He took the loss hard and believed he let his mother down. He would spend the years following her death taking his job a protector and provider seriously. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941. The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club established at Fort Hood, TX recognized great leaders. In ADP 6-22 the Army breaks down the attributes it is looking for in a leader. The first attribute is character. That means a leader is disciplined, empathetic, and lives by the Army values. The next attribute is presence. That means a leader is fit, confident, and resilient. The last attribute is intellect. That means a leader the expertise and mental agility to lead his Soldier. Audie Murphy represented all of this before it found its way into Army doctrine. Acceptance into the Audie Murphy Club, means you set yourself apart just like Audie. You must live the motto of the club, "You lead from the
