Art Analysis: The Windmill

The first thing that immediately catches my eye is the large windmill in the background of the painting. The windmill is the focal point of the entire painting. It catches your eye and draws you into the painting. The artwork is dull, there is not a whole lot of color, and the clouds in the sky are dark like it is about to rain. The windmill is on the waterfront, with the ocean on one side and a village on the other side. There is a very large castle in the back of the painting. In the water there is a sailboat that is leaving the dock with people in it, maybe traveling somewhere or going fishing. The artist conveyed the difference between light and dark and used shadows which helped in accomplishing his intent. The light in the painting is coming from the sun which is not shown. The clouds are covering the sun, so the light is just a glare out of the clouds. The little bit of light in the painting portrays the tension between the people in this city. This painting has a depth perspective. When looking at the painting you feel like you can walk right into it and you would never stop. You can see as far as your eye meets. In this painting the depth is portrayed by the mountains in the background, the mountains are as far out as you can see. Depth is significant in this painting because it allows you to feel like you are right there in the painting, and can see on forever. Creating depth in an painting was significant during this time period because it was something that was hard to do, and this artist portrayed it very well. Jacob van Ruisdael was a Dutch painter and during the time of 1670 King Charles II and King Louis XIV signed a secret anti-Dutch treaty. This would have affected him because not only was he Dutch, but they probably would have treated the Dutch people badly, since they were signing a anti-Dutch treaty. Also, during this time period was the Dutch Golden Age. The Dutch Golden Age was a time period where the Dutch people were very successful
