Art is necessary and important to communicate and express ideas, send messages to create a sense of beauty, and to generate emotions which can be transmitted to others. This idea of art is shown in Aldous Huxley’s novel, Brave New World, and various poems that shows us how much art can be needed.
Art is a necessity because it can move people and inspire them to act as individuals, which leads to curiosity and self-expression. As John the savage and Mustapha Mond are talking to each other, Mond states, “Beauty’s attractive, and we don’t want people attracted to old things. We want them to like the new ones” (Huxley 219). This quote illustrates how Mond is literally taking art away from the citizens which prevents them from being individuals. Without this ability to express themselves, they are essentially losing their freedom. Due to the people in the world state not seeing an alternative to the present, they lack the knowledge of being an individual. John seems to be losing a grip on reality because he is carrying a huge burden. His character ends up representing William Shakespeare, especially when he quotes a line from Hamlet, saying, “A man who dreams of fewer things than there are in heaven and earth” (Huxley 231). This quote opens the fact that John is clueless. By John not even knowing what a philosopher is points out his flaw about being heavily passionate about something he does not understand which makes it hard for him to communicate his feelings. Although, in the poem, Ode on a Grecian Urn, Keats states, “Will silent be; and not a soul to tell” (Line 39).
