The name of the book I chose for our first nine weeks book report has the name Devil Boats. The author is William Breuer, the author chose to write this book because his father served on a PT boat in Pearl Harbor. I selected this book because i know very many veterans that served in WW2, also i am very interested in the battle of Pearl Harbor. This book is about the PT boats fighting the Japanese during WW2.
After Matt Null’s presentation, I was entertained by the creative writings of the famous novelist and short story writer Edward P. Jones. His presentation began with one of his associates introducing him as one of the greatest writers in contemporary America writing on the struggles African Americans faced in the nation’s history. In his presentation, Jones read to us two of his newest short stories The Devil Swims Across the Anacostia River and In The Blink of God’s Eye. Jones used outstanding imagery, but what I took note of most was the particular way he used dialog to describe his characters subliminally. He would use intense descriptive details to describe a scene’s environment and perhaps the outfits of his characters, but Jones took
The Danger That Lies In The Sea of Self Sacrifice By Mateo Bochinski The capacity of one's ability to self-sacrifice is often measured by their actions in a situation of instability. Whether one can withstand the situation with a degree of resilience or shatter under the burden is dependent on the person’s way of life and their ideas of fulfillment. For a parent the overwhelming desire to sacrifice for the well-being of their family, is thought to play a role in fulfillment. However, the short story “The Boat” by Alistair Mcleod exemplifies the potential self-sacrifice can have in the role of destruction. Through the narrator's (the son’s) account, the story follows the life of a rural fishing family with set beliefs and values instilled
The theme applies to our lives in our society because we shouldn’t be afraid when it comes to the point where you need to make a difference or save lives by risking your own life considering that there are people who died with honor or became amazing heroes from doing this and they are not afraid since they know that they are doing the right thing like protecting the people who need their help. This story motivated me to not be afraid to risk your for others and to not be a bystander to violence. I would totally recommend this book to others who are interested in historical fiction, adventure stories about sailing, and

Brandon Sanderson’s science fiction novel, “Steelheart,” takes place in a post-apocalyptic universe packed with complex problems that many normal humans are not willing to solve. The cities are packed with creatures known as epics that are very similar to humans that have acquired special powers David, the protagonist in the story, is put in a very tough situation and hopes to overcome the what seems to be the greatest obstacle, defeating Steelheart the most powerful and evil epic of all. One theme that this book suggests is that although some of life's struggle may make people want to give up on their desires, through belief and perseverance they are able to overcome greater obstacles. Sanderson uses Author's craft frequently through the
The boys in Past the Shallows face a series of challenges and hardships throughout the novel, including the loss of their mother, the strained relationship with their father, and the dangers of the ocean. However, despite these challenges, the boys demonstrate incredible resilience and strength, showing that it is possible to overcome even the most difficult circumstances. Through the portrayal of resilience, Parrett highlights the importance of perseverance and determination in the face of
The “beast,” an entity we know little about. What is it, exactly? What does it represent? During World War 2, a plane transporting English schoolboys was struck down over an unnamed island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The children became stranded, frightened, and paranoid.
Survival Essay Three paramount traits needed to survive any life or death situation are bravery, knowledge, and perseverance. Characters in the story Most Dangerous Game, the movie Castaway, and even people in the article “The Migrant Crisis” will show us why all of these traits are good to have in survival situations. Bravery is an important trait to have when trying to survive. You are faced with many scary or difficult circumstances in a survival situation and you need a brave mindset to tackle those challenges. “Rainsford remembered the [gun] shots...he swam in that direction…” (Connell, 2) shows that even though the sound of gunshots usually don’t mean well, Rainsford decided to swim toward that potential danger, even knowing that
Life can be difficult, and people every day have to endure their own type of adversity, but adversity isn’t limited to just one problem but an array of difficulties. These problems can appear from many factors may it be a physical, mental, or social situation. The problems of adversity can be seen in the book The Other Wes Moore, as throughout the book, both of the Moore’s have faced different problems, with one overcoming, and the other being stuck with obstacles. When anyone is in the face of adversity, being guided to overcome will lead to success, while the less guided will lead to more stresses. Any type of adversity can emerge at any time, but the best way to overcome it is to find guidance.
“The Turtle,” or The Struggle? In the short story “The Turtle,” the author John Steinbeck claims that life always throws different obstacles in the reader's way. Steinbeck supports his claim by using the turtle’s journey as a metaphor for life. The author’s purpose is to show that even though life can be difficult, the reader must persevere. The author writes in a reflective tone for readers to reminisce on their struggles through life.
These relationships while not imperative to the story still play an important role in understating the Characters and their motivations. Learning of our lineage may help us understand ourselves better than we think we already do. The story gives us examples of this as parent child relationships, and the experiences gained during our younger years from those around us. In “The Sea of Monsters”, one of the relationships we learn about is the fact
Furthermore, the aspect of discovery can also be conveyed in a different ways. The fact that sometimes people, like myself, are being forced to find a new place which can result a negative and positive emotional impact, or future possibilities. In ‘The Little Refugee’, Bruce Whatley illustrates a small shabby boat jam-packed with worried people who are desperate to find new life and hope, whereas Hurley’s his discovery was being forced by his inner-life. Dull and grey-black smoky colours symbolize the overwhelming fear as seen through the body language of the people. And the dominance of the stormy clouds adds to the uncertainty, and the salience draws our eyes to the boat, helping us to easily relate to the terrifying encounters.
The men on the sea, have formed a brotherhood where they depend on each other to survive, and they find comfort in being together, “they were friends—friends in a more strangely iron-bound strength than may be ordinary”(3). The friendship that they form helps them to survive nature 's attack. Moving forward, Crane informed the readers that the four men, they knew that their destiny are controlled by some outside force. Even if they had the same thoughts, they didn’t share them which each other: "If I am going to lose my life to the sea--if I am going to lose my life to the sea--if I am going to lose my life to the sea— why, was I allowed to come this far and see sand and trees?” (11).
Adversity can take us by surprise, but everyone at some point in life experiences it. The way our personal identity can be shaped is through our phases of adversity. The experiences of dealing with difficulties can shape the way we view life and the actions that will show our persona. When we persevere adversity and obstacles it shows our reputation and our true type of identity. In the play Hamlet, William Shakespeare, illustrates the way Hamlet, as well as other characters, deal with adversity through the types of motives they are seeking.
