In two Arthurian Legends… “Excalibur” and “Merlin” the tales draw readers to the story with the great ideas of a hero, magic and Christian references. In both of these stories there are main points that are taken all the way through each story. There is also some variation through each story as well. The way each story is told is to attract the reader to this great legend and why we are still drawn to his story today. The movies “Excalibur” and “Merlin” both have a common factor, that factor being the way King Arthur is portrayed throughout the films. In each movie Arthur is a very young man, son of the rival King who is born to be the greatest King of all time. To prove Arthur is the one who is to be King, the sword excalibur is driven into stone by Merlin. The sword is to stay in the stone to await the arrival of the only man that is able to remove it. For years no man could remove the stone from the sword, until the arrival of Arthur who pulls the sword out of the stone on the first try. Another similarity of the two Arthurian Legends is the way Merlin is Arthur's main advisor, Merlin is able to help Arthur and be there for whenever he needs advice on a task.

In “Excalibur” the characters Merlin and Morgana represent the Pagan aspect of the movie. The two characters are able to use magic and cast spells for better or for worse; usually the spells cause more caouse than to benefit ant other character. While the religious aspect of the story is stronger than the pagan reference. On the other hand, in “Merlin” magic and spells is the “old ways” that Queen Mab wants to pull back into the people’s lives. Yet the power of Christ is stronger and overcoming the old pagan
