The Articles of Confederation was written in 1777 by nearly the exact same people who would later go on to write the United States Constitution. This document was meant to unify the colonies to create a sufficient government. The Articles of Confederation’s focus was to ensure that the state and local government possessed the power throughout the colonies. However, the document failed the country due to the lack of a central government because the states did not want to reestablish the type of government that England had after the Revolutionary War. The lack of bigger government caused many problems that would make each state almost look like they’re were separate.
Once the American Revolution had ended, America required a new form of government to happen. November of 1777, the Continental Congress accepted the first American Constitution known as the Articles of Confederation. Shortly after the Articles were confirmed by the states in 1781, multiple problems started to arise that provided the United States with an ineffective government from 1781 all the way to 1789. They were not able to address any of the problems dealing with the American Nation due to the lacking features of the government under the Articles. Moreover, the Articles presented each state with too much power that lead to a loose confederation creating a limited power to the central government.
The Articles of Confederation (A.o.C.) was the official government for the United States after independence from Britain. This government was weak, and ineffective. It could not fix the nation's problems which prompted a call for change. The men that changed this government are known are the founding fathers. The founding fathers attended a convention that would be known as our constitutional convention.
America had just won the revolutionary war and became a free nation. Their constitution, the Articles of Confederation had many problems. Many farmer colonists felt like America was just another form of England with high taxes and unfair laws. Eventually, the depression was so bad the colonist got fed up and started to devise a plan. Daniel Shays was the leader of planning the rebellion.
Federalists vs. Anti-Federalists Federalists were mostly merchants, bankers manufacturers, and wealthy farm owners. They basically owned land or some type of property and were well-educated. Most of these people lived in urban areas. Anti-Federalists were mostly artisans, shopkeepers, frontier settlers, and poor farmers. They were mostly uneducated and illiterate and most of them lived in rural areas.
The federalists believed that the United States required a slightly more aggressive and hands-on government after the Articles of Confederation failed. The federalists believed in limited government. That politicians should have the ability to make an impact with their power, just not to abuse it. With this came the concept of separation of powers. This meaning that no one can ever climb so high up the power ladder to make any catastrophic repercussions.
And being that the Federalists and the Anti-federalists are divided they’re revealed in the debate over national states. Many of these questions are still being question today; What is the best form of government? What rights must the government protect? Which government powers should be granted to the states, and which to the federal government? These things also helped led the debates to form a public conversation, and mainly through the newspaper editorials.

When the Articles of Confederation failed to organize the citizens and the economy of America its citizens decided to advocate for a different form of government, that arose in the creation of the Constitution, the supreme law of the land. As a new form of government was presented the fear that the American Revolution had brought upon the colonies lead to the creation of two different political groups the Federalist and Anti- federalist that stood for those who feared the government and those who believed that the government should be stronger. Based on the Federalist papers I believe that the Anti- federalist had a better argument as they pushed for the protection of individual rights and the limitation of the power of the government. The Anti-federalist wanted each state to have their own government. These totally different view point lead to a lot of heated debates. The major points were, what rights to protect, which form of government is best and how to divide government power.
Federalist and Anti-Federalists: The Debate that Shaped American History Following the turbulent period of the Revolutionary War, a young nation was officially born on the massive continent of North America. After years of indirect British rule, the colonies were left to completely govern themselves and were largely disconnected with no strong centralized government to unite the colonies. With the colonists preferring limited government such as governors with weak executive power, their animosity with an authoritative and aristocratic government was clear (Baker 9/29/15). This preference was reflected in the first constitution of the United States, the Articles of Confederation.
The Federalists and Anti-Federalists were arguing about the strength of the strong central government and the weak central. strong state government. The Federalists held that to preserve the independence that the country had gained in the American Revolution, a more powerful federal government with jurisdiction over the states was required. The Anti-Federalist supported strong state governments, a weak federal government, and the support of individual liberty for national politics. The Federalists and Anti-federalists were arguing because of government power and the Anti-federalists were correct because all Americans voted for their rules.
