In the novel A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J Gaines, Grant is a main character that has a lot of influence over the people in his community. Some might even consider him a hero. I believe that Grant is a hero because he helps Jefferson become a man, changes himself for the better, and wants to continue changing the community. Over the course of the novel, Grant helps Jefferson become the man that he needs to be in order to walk to his death with honor. When Grant first begrudgingly went to visit Jefferson in prison Jefferson was in a really low state.

William Faulkner’s novel As I Lay Dying follows the Bundren family on a journey while it explores the subject of heroism and discusses its subjectivity. The family travels on an expedition to bury Addie, the deceased mother of the protagonist, Darl Bundren, and his siblings. As days continue to pass, however, the journey seemed interminable. During the adventure, the family takes a stop at Gillespie’s barn for the evening. While they rest Darl sets the barn, in which the coffin sits, ablaze.

The use of the author's diction creates different characters and traits. Faulkner the author of As I Lay Dying gives each character a different personality with his unique style of writing, but one character, in particular, stands out. Darl, the second oldest son of Addie Bundren, is narrated very properly while everyone else is narrated in more of an improper tone.
Reveals about situation: Holden is very angry, and the reader can tell that the statement was said in an angry tone compared to his usual sarcastic and nonchalant tone. Also, after Sally tells him how his statement upset her, he laughs at her: “All of sudden I did something I shouldn’t have. I laughed” (p. 149). This situation is very similar to that in William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying.

The story revolves around the Bundren family, who are poor country folk, depicting an already ill Addie Bundren, whose dying wish is to be buried in Jefferson and her family’s journey getting her there. The family endures multiple obstacles before finally being able to burry Addie, along the way we see each character’s internal battles as well. Addie’s death triggers the reoccurring thought of death within the characters, ultimately altering their identities.
