Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Ronald Takaki addressed stereotypes of Asian Americans in the perspective of an American academic, historian, ethnographer, and an author. Nonetheless, his awareness of identity as a descendant of Japanese immigrants is clearly portrayed throughout “Double Victory.” Takaki initially studied at Wooster University, and work there led to his questioning of ethnic identity. His personal experiences, such as his wife’s family’s refusal to accept him because he is a ‘Jap’, inspired him to dedicate his life for equality for Asian Americans. He was involved in developing UC Berkeley's multicultural requirement for graduation as a professor: the American Cultures Requirement.
Lee then gave an accurate portrayal of their beliefs and daily life. However, for the students who saw Lee as an outsider their story might not have been illustrated the way they deemed to be true. Lee states that it was “difficult for me to gain the acceptance of the low-achieving Asian Americans” (Lee, 2009, p.21). Lee is unable to fully connect with some of the Asian american students, especially the new wavers. After interviewing a new wave student she states that “it was obvious I had offended her… I learned to be more careful about how I approached new wave students” (Lee, 2009, p.45).
A review of Eric Lius', The Accidental Asian, and his search for self-discovery. Looking at how his experiences growing up relate to current and future generations of students who are trying to find where they belong in this ethnically structured society. Through Liu’s experiences, we can understand the struggle of identity and help students find their own. Finding that we do not have to have a strong connection to our heritage to have a strong identity and looking for our roots does not make us any less of the person we are now. Breaking stereotypes and understanding others is how we can help students in the future.
At school Deming is viewed as a white student: “Being surrounded by other Chinese people had become so strange. In high school, kids said they never thought of him as Asian or Roland as Mexican, like it was a compliment” (20). His peers see him as a model minority, someone who fits Asian-American stereotypes of always doing well academically. However, Deming doesn’t fit the cultural expectations and instead struggles with motivation in school. There is an internal conflict between Deming’s racial difference and his identity.

The third section describes the implications of being a model minority. This project was made to show what a model minority is and the significance of being labelled as a model minority by analyzing historical events and the current day. The historical portion of the project provides the context of the model minority status. Similarly to other minority groups, Asian Americans were seen as inferior.

The Model Minority Myth is a myth that sets forth a stereotype that all Asian Americans are individuals who always achieve at a high level in their academic and professional endeavors. This perception sets forth a notion that all Asian Americans must be intelligent or high achieving—. If one does not adhere to this stereotype, one may feel like an outlier. According to Li Zhou, the myth is "a racist trope that suggests that all Asian Americans are well off and pits them against other groups." It pits groups against each other because of the strong presence of stratification in our contemporary society–with Asian Americans at the top of the rung in education and wealth.
As a result of the segregation from other races, Asian Americans have typically kept to themselves and are focused on becoming successful. In addition to the political absence of Asians extending beyond other races, the persistent model minority myth is an accepted truth within the community itself. While the stereotupe is a complete myth, it has been so embedded that even Asian Americans start to believe it, making them and other believe that Asians are the only minority that have endowed the key to success in America. Asians are not only placed in the shadows, but they also choose to stay; many are too comfortable with their successful personal lives, to the extent of neglecting the matters of other Asians ethnicities. Additionally, Asians are perceived to be traditionally passive, giving an almost filial piety towards white people in hopes of having the same privileges.
The Model Minority term is used for a minority group who is shown to be the example of how other minority groups should aim for or to be since they are either the brightest or the exemplified group of indivuals one could think of at certain times. Examples would be in education or goal settings or even how one behaves with others or in their own community might set up the mere expecation of a model minoirty. A group that fully protrays these expectations would be the Asian community. Reasons for this community being model minority is the constant achievments they recive at school or at work. In the United States, using the term “model minority” to describe Asian Americans does not negate the fact that they are still a minority who deal with the same hardships and discrimination as other minorities. Issues such as these are undeniably in the school systems that are inhabited by large numbers of these students with Asian backgrounds. They are exemplified by the bipolar historical treatment of Asian Americans, the numbers that matter in education today, and in the problems created and overcome by the people that face them. Asian students perform as well as white students in reading and better than white students in math. Reformers ignore these gains and castigate the public schools for the persistence of the gap. Closing the racial achievement gap has been a major goal of education policy makers for at least the past decade. There has been some progress, but it has been slow and uneven.
