In class, we discussed three different parenting styles; authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative. In my opinion, I think that parents need to realize that the parenting style that they use to raise their children will play a large role in who their children become and their future success. Authoritarian parents tend to raise children that are anxious, depressed, and socially awkward among other things, which I think completely messed up. How could a parent bring a child into this world and then treat them in such a way that they become very unhappy and end up struggling with themselves and life? Children should be allowed to ask questions and express themselves any way that makes them happy. However, while parents should be soft and responsive to their children, they also need to set rules, otherwise their children will become reckless, entitled, aggressive, etc. That’s why the best parenting style is authoritative. With authoritative parents, they lie in between permissive and authoritarian, which tends to result in children being at ease, confident, responsible, respectful, and independent. These children are like this because the people who raised them cared for their physical/mental wellbeing and kept them in line, while also encouraging them to express themselves and have open discussions.
As a child, I grew up with authoritarian parents and let me just say that it was, and still is, one of the worst things I have ever experienced. My parents were extremely strict, demanding, and manipulative. It didn’t help that they had also singled me out as the scapegoat, constantly blaming every little thing that happened on me. And even though they both have mellowed out now and shifted to a more authoritative style, it doesn’t change the fact that they had done some real damage to me.
