Question 1: How did You First get Involved in Healthcare Technology?
S.M. answered (personal communication, July 14, 2017), “It was serendipitous on how I became involved in healthcare technology. I started as a clinical instructor in nursing education and I could see the writing on the wall at one point with all of the changes in management. I realized my role as a clinical instructor was going to change. So I applied for a clinical informatics instructor position and got the job! I fell in love with informatics and how it impacts the front line nursing staff and patient care. I was in this role for five years.”

answered (personal communication, July 14, 2017), “My major responsibility is to design and test new technologies that are implemented throughout the hospital system. I work on numerous projects and mostly spend time working with the front line nursing staff and interdisciplinary teams to determine the changes that are needed. I also implement new systems that help decrease the amount of day to day documentation done by nurses.”
Question 4: How Would You Describe Your Organization and Its Culture?
S.M. answered (personal communication, July 14, 2017), “I am so proud to be a Cleveland Clinic employee! At times it can be a challenge, but overall it is a welcoming culture and I feel it is a great place to work. Each facility has its different culture and I just need to be respectful of it. Recently we acquired Akron General, which is a union hospital. The union culture is completely different than the rest of the system. It does add some complexity to system implementation.”
Question 5: What Specific Job Qualifications do You Need to Perform Your Role?

Question 9: Describe What You see as the Role of Information Systems and how they Impact Professional Nursing Practice.
S.M. answered (personal communication, July 14, 2017), “My role is to optimize and customize the data available in EPIC to better serve our staff. Technology is a tool used to improve the quality of care provided by the nursing staff. However, it does not replace learned assessment skills. Nurses should not become lax and dependent on technology. They must always review the data and assess their patient when making clinical decisions. However, I feel there is a way to do it better than how we do it now. The Cleveland Clinic has customized EPIC to the point where we need to go back to the basics.”
Question 10: What Process is in Place in Your Organization to Insure Compliance Safeguarding Personal Health Information with HIPPA Standards or Requirements? How does this Influence Your
