As I, Archinus the great General, stand before you all today I would first like to go over the history of our governance. It is here within these very walls that the first type of democratic republic first came about. We were the first to let adult male citizens come in and vote on legislations instead of a group of higher officials making decisions. Our type of government made sure that no one was outside of the law and everyone was held up to the same standards. Our elected officials should be anointed from a lottery of chance between qualified candidates. I see no reason on why we should change the system that has been in place for centuries. If we hear from 500 instead of a select fifty our Polis would be stronger and more solidified because we really get to hear what everyone is truly concerned about. It is vital that we get these diverse opinions from a group of 500 rather than fifty because that is what our democracy relies on and what we pride from. People mostly do what is best for them and make decisions based on how it will better that person. So who’s to say that this small council won’t make decisions that only help them instead of our people. Also elected officials could lie just to get to their position that they wanted. There can also be bias’ between this small governing council and I feel that some elected officials would be susceptible to bribery and handouts. Bias’ leads to unjust decisions that will weaken the Polis. We need insight from a large randomized group to get the best results so we can help as many people as possible.
Another reason why I feel that we should keep our government the way that it has been is because I feel that we are taking away certain liberties from our friends and families. We have already given citizenship and opportunities to buy our land and goods to the undeserving metics and to the people who do not have the blood of Athens running through them. Now that these undeserving people have citizenship they might want to be a part of our councils which would not be a good idea. They would make rules which benefit themselves instead of our Athenian
