Two rivals, one being a war machine and the other being simple, neutral, and lawful. The two rivals I am talking about are Athens and Sparta. Athens and Sparta are two city states that were very different but also in some ways similar. Athens and Sparta were the two greatest city states within ancient Greece. The city states can be very different but also similar in terms of education, military, and government.

A major important aspect in the two city states was education. The city states both had very different education systems. Athens had a very simple education system, much like today's system. In Athens you would learn about language, math, science, and art. Sparta on the other hand had a very brutal and harsh education system. In Sparta boys at the age of 7 would be stripped from their parents and forced into military school. The boys would fight, obey, train, and face harsh conditions. Athenian boys made a transition from normal school to military school at the age of 18. The training was simple and they learned how to fight. Good thing for the Athenian boys, the training only lasted 2 years. Unfortunately for Spartan boys, they had to stay in their military schools until they were 30, even if they were married! It doesn't end there, the boys only get out of school at age 30, but they have to serve in the military until they are 60! It may seem like the city states have nothing in common in terms of military, but they both learn how to fight, and they use the same battle formations. “When Athenian boys turned 18 they were required to learn how to fight in battle” (Document B). Although Spartan boys had much longer and harder training, both boys learned how to fight. In the aspect of brutality both militaries are very different, but both Athenian and Spartan boys learn how to fight, and use the same battle
