Athletes are perhaps some of the highest-profiled, and influential celebrities that exist. Worldwide, athletes provide inspiration, entertainment and motivation for people through their seemingly impossible feats, and encompass a vast array of abilities, ranging from stamina, strength and skill. However, in this new era of technological advancement in the fields of science and the body, a new culture of drugs and substances has emerged. Whilst many of these supplements and substances are legal, this can also include the emergence of several illegal chemicals, and are often used by athletes. But why would athletes, who are often highly competitive and condone the use of supplements, choose the take nutritional substances? Do the possible benefits of these substances outweigh the negative effects on the body? The physical ability and skill of an athlete is highly determining of their international recognition. However, though many athletes persist through hard training, diets, fitness regimes and dedication to achieve their goals, many feel as if they cannot reach a suitable standard. Through the temptation of fame and fortune, this stems a desire to reach this standard through any means popular, and many turn towards drugs and substances. This often overlooks the fact that many of these supplements will not provide any meaningful benefit towards the athlete.
