Athletes are some of the most hardworking people on this planet, having to juggle their personal life and professional life, as well as being able to excel in sports makes them fascinating as human beings. These abilities, rewards athletes with millions of dollars. Athletes’ immense salaries are fairly earned due to their vast skillset, ability to influence, and exceptional performance at a professional level. These huge salaries stem from the fact that professional sports are part of the entertainment industry, with athletes being the main selling point of the industry. The views an athletes can generate is considered, as higher viewed sports pay their athletes higher amounts. Similarly to YouTube, athletes’ salary comes from selling of merchandise, and how many people view their games. This is seen when comparing different sports and their athlete’s salaries. For instance, in the WNBA the average salary for their players is approximately $78,000, while the NBA is at a much more substantial $6.4 million. Contrary to widespread belief this is not due to gender, but due more to the significantly lower number of tickets and merchandise sold in the WNBA, since many find it less entertaining. Many of them are unable to spend much time with their relatives, as athletes are training daily for games. Additionally, some risk potentially career ending injuries, as well as a chance of life-threatening injuries. Athletes are also unable to spend time doing other things they enjoy, for instance, many athletes are on a strict diet to maintain their athleticism. To expand upon this, athletes cannot indulge in their hobbies as much as they would like to. The sacrifices of an athlete are needed, whilst the money they earn can be spent on providing for their family as they are not able to be with them.
