The unique and tragic legend of Atlantis has circulated around the world with its details of wealth and sudden disappearance. The story of Atlantis dates back to 330 BCE when Plato used the idea of a “utopian society to represent ideal commonwealth” (Britannica “Utopian Literature”). Plato, born in 428 BCE, became known as a great philosopher and studied under the wise Socrates. He later went on to teach one of the most famous philosophers in Greek history, Aristotle. Created by Poseidon, Atlantis became well known for its size. Thousands of people, called Atlanteans, proudly called Atlantis their home. The island, separated by moats and linked by canals, got split up into separate kingdoms for the multiple kings to rule. Unfortunately, as …show more content…

After running multiple tests, he noticed strange structures about twelve feet under the surface of southwest Spain (Morgan “Digging For Answers”). Many scientists believe that the construction could have served as the harbor of Atlantis. Leading to this discovery, Reeder has joined a team of archaeologists under the direction of Richard Freund. Richard Freund stated that, “the structures are massive and ancient. They also coincide with location that Plato gave in 360 BCE.” Reeder and Freund used the technique of drilling miniature holes into the structures to collect a sample of the material and analyze it. Reeder then goes and examines the current of the ocean and uses radar scannings to pinpoint locations. He also uses a powerful metal detector to locate anymore missing pieces of artifacts or evidence (Morgan “Digging For Answers”). Due to the erosion of the buildings, no samples found its way to humans and labs. “Even if adobe bricks indicates harbors or buildings, it is unlikely that the site will be evacuated” (Morgan “Digging For Answers”). Not only has Reeder and Freund claimed that Atlantis may lay near the coast of Spain, but other searchers have placed the empire in this location. Unfortunately, this theory does not line up with Plato’s myth completely. Also, not much about Spain’s culture or history matches Atlantis. Most of Spain’s …show more content…

The curiosity of those who have heard of its wealth and strength drive them to attempt to find the lost city. The evidence on Atlantis has proven its existence and possible locations. Even today, scholars remain torn between whether or not Atlantis existed or if the whole idea came from Plato’s creative mind. Theories about Atlantis have also connected to other cold cases, such as the Bermuda Triangle and mysterious energy sources (Sheposh “Atlantis (Lost Civilization)”). “The Great Crystal, a powerful energy source, and the misuse of this device caused the kingdom’s destruction” (Sheposh “Atlantis (Lost Civilization)”). Regardless of its existence and true fate, the idea that a perfect human society seemed possible until it came face to face with awful sins such as greed and pride. The legend of Atlantis continues to get told by millions, whether by parents telling a bedtime story to children to “authors bouncing off of the idea for a bestselling book” (Gale “Atlantis”). The true location of Atlantis has not shown itself to humans just yet. Our searches journey far and long and only small remains come up. With new advanced technology that might come in the future, humans can hopefully find a more efficient and accurate way to track the fallen city. Techniques such as solar and radar imagery as well as underwater cameras and robots could lead us to a successful mission across the Mediterranean, and find
