Can Santorini be Atlantis?

Atlantis, the fabled lost city: the city that was full of fortune and wealth that turned greedy and angered the gods. By angering the gods, the entire nation was swallowed up in a massive earthquake. However, the only proof we have to Atlantis existing at all is a single dialogue written by Greek philosopher Plato (427-347 BCE), and many theories that have come from that. The theories cover the location of Atlantis being everywhere from The Bahamas to Antartica. But the theory that is most common is Atlantis was the island nation of Santorini, or to be more precise Thera. From the evidence I’ve been given, Santorini could be Atlantis.

The most notable being it’s shape, round with alternating circles of sea and land. There was also mention of red, white and black rocks. Both can be seen in Santorini and they are an example of an igneous rock, a rock formed from the cooling down of lava. Plato mentioned the island was also very rich. What we can see from the Thera frescoes, discovered in the 1960’s, the island had a lot of saffron. It would have gained the wealth from the trading that was so prominent for an island nation. It was also a place of kings, in which the frescoes also show, with two people on top of a building that could be a temple. So far, Atlantis and Santorini seem to be a match. The whole story is based off a single dialogue, but even that could have been fabricated. There is proof that it could have been real, quoting from the dialogue, “Solon, who was intending to use the tale from his poem, enquired into the meaning of the names, and found only the early Egyptians in writing them out again translated them into our language. My great-grandfather, Dropides, had the original writing, which is still in my possession.” This is a very long way of explaining that the historic recollection that has been told is true, is his and that he has studied it for a long time. But apart from that, only conspire theories have come from that. No other proof since Plato’s dialogues show any meaning towards anything to do with Atlantis, apart from movies and other fictitious media.
