Have you ever fantasized about a large, mythical city rich with silver, gold, rare exotic wildlife, and some of the best, most advanced technology? Atlantis is a story told by Plato that long ago there was a utopian civilization in the Atlantic, but it was destroyed and sank to the ocean floor. Plato’s Atlantis has been talked about now for thousands of years. While some people believe Atlantis really existed others believe this advanced civilization only existed in Plato’s mind. Based on research it appears that the legend of Atlantis is fictional and no traces have been found from the lost city that proves its existence. That is a huge mass of land that does not seem hard to find, which questions the believers of Atlantis. There are so many theories of where Atlantis is located, some say it is located in Antarctica, some say the Bermuda triangle, others the Strait of Gibraltar, or off the Moroccan coast. With so many possible locations people do not know the exact place to look for the lost city. Plato was very specific about the location of his fantasy, researchers found that Plato’s “description of the city was built impossible” (Mishkov). So, the real reason that Plato created his theory isn’t because he knows Atlantis existed. According to “Romm a professor believes Plato created the story of Atlantis to convey his philosophical theories” Many of Plato’s other philosophical writings teach about people becoming greedy, and the gradual destruction of humankind. The story of Atlantis is a way for Plato to grab people's attention in an exciting story form and get his beliefs across (Drye). Plato’s writings were the only ones written about Atlantis from that ancient time. Supposedly the stories about Atlantis were passed down by word of mouth, but we didn’t have any proof that the city was documented other than in Plato’s writings
