There are many reasons why the U.S. should not drop an atomic bomb on Japan, but a major one is it will have bad long term consequences. A telegram to the President of the U.S. from an American religious group states “The use of atomic bombs sets an extremely dangerous precedent for the future of mankind.” (Doc. K) This shows that if there was another war, it would end in an atomic bomb. If this happened, then there would be a lot more sadness and destruction, it would kill millions of innocent civilians that had nothing to do with the war. B) It would have cost so much money to use an atomic bomb. The U.S. has spent over $341 billion dollars already during World War II. If they dropped the atomic bomb on Japan, they would not have to worry about them fighting back and would not have to keep making more weapons just to defeat the Japanese. It is expensive to manufacture weapons over and over, dropping the atomic bomb would just be a one time thing and it would save time as well. Also, If the Americans and Japanese fought on the island of Kyushu, then more Americans would die as well, if they dropped the atomic bomb then lots of lives would be saved. Also, Nicholas Kristoff said that military officials were likely to fight on, furiously, until the end willing to "Sacrifice 20 million Japanese lives," as late as August of 1945.” (Doc. I) If the Americans drop the atomic bomb, then it would save money because it’s cost is much cheaper than manufacturing thousands of weapons. In the Battle of the Midway, Japan had lost most of their main navy forces, allowing the United States to obtain complete ownership of the skies in the remainder of the war.
