The atomic bombs were that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan took place on August 6, 1945 and August 9, 1945. There is a great deal of controversy regarding whether or not the Untied States should have dropped the bombs on the Japanese cities. Using the atomic bombs have both pros and cons that many people feel strongly about. Some believe that Japan was not close to surrendering and more causalities would have occurred during a land invasion if the bombs were not dropped. In contrast, there were also several other ways of of attempting to end war with Japan that could have been done besides using the bombs. Before the bombs were even used there could have been many alternative options to get the Japanese to surrender and thus end the war. A military blockade could have been put into place around the country of Japan to impede the supplies being given to the country. Without their resources, Japan would ultimately have to surrender and the atomic bombs would not have been used. Also we could have proceeded with a demonstration bomb that would be dropped in the ocean to intentionally frighten the Japan into surrendering. Seeing the impact of what these bombs could do to their country could have been enough to stop the war. Innocent people who were living their lives were greatly affected and the many generations following them because of the United States use of the atomic bomb. Many people who lived in Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and surrounding cities were directly effected with life threatening cancers, radiation exposure, and birth defects. The radiation that the civilians were exposed to was in such high amounts that it lead to many different types of cancer for the survivors. Not only the survivors were affected, later generations from the survivors were born with serious birth defects including club foot and having additional fingers and toes. The people born with birth defect were not alive during the bombings and still have to pay the
