Because we are saved does not mean we will not face persecutions, adversity, hardships, or offenses. On the contrary, Jesus makes it clear that we are going to be persecuted, and told us in John 15:20b, “If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you.” Apostle James in his letter tells us to “count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations (James 1:2).
Though social media is prevalent in expressing the users ' views, it cannot be ignored that literature influences its readers greatly by the writers ' opinion. Even if many of these attempt to write an unbiased account, it is nearly impossible to completely render their work from personal beliefs. Many ideas and values come forth subtly through the characters words or the way an idea is portrayed. Religions and politics fall mostly in this category, including the question of man’s way to salvation. Emily Dykstra and Dr. Jennifer Feenstra, both professors within the psychology department, discussed the journeys of their faith life and how they came to truly articulate their personal beliefs. These professors also talked about the many challenges faced by “emerging adults” who perhaps have a rather weak hold of their faith in the midst of a heavily-secular world and how to deal with such challenges. Of course, they believe that our education at Northwestern equips us as “courageous and faithful learners” with the suitable framework for our faith, yet they also realize that this Christian environment may be sheltering us from the harsh realities of the world. This session reminded me of a previous discussion I had with my FYS class about why we believe what we believe. Through that discussion, I realized that I had never really articulated what my faith actually meant to me.

Perhaps one of the most defining characteristics of Christianity comes from Christians’ view of life as a journey. Jesus’s life, the standard for Christian living, ended up as a journey to the cross. Full of pain, these journeys offer solace in the hope of a happy ending, although uncertainty and pain lie between the believer and the end of the journey. Journeying home often becomes the main purpose of Christian journeys, while journeying from pain serves as an escape from unhealthy life experiences for Christians. However, the thirst for earthly desires and knowledge sometimes becomes a stumbling block for Christians.
In “Sinners in The Hands of an Angry God”, Johnathan Edwards uses fear to create images that help his audience experience the consequences of sinful behavior. He uses imagery and figurative language to persuade his readers. He wants us to get a mental picture of Hell in your head and he wants us to fear the wrath of God. One such image was when Edward wrote, “When men are on god’s hands and they could fall to Hell, natural men are held in the hands of God, over the pit of Hell.” God could let us fall into the eternity of burning flames anytime He wants to.
Jonathan Edwards once said: “Resolution One: I will live for God. Resolution Two: If no one else does, I still will.” Since birth (October 5th, 1703), Jonathan has always been a devoted Puritan which explains why he began the Great Awakening, along with George Whitefield. Edwards started preaching and wanted people to reconvert to Puritanism. His work, “Sinners at the Angry Hands of God,” was written on July 8, 1741.
Basic Christianity is a crucial foundation that must be deeply entrenched within the hearts and minds of believers. The essential and basic principles aid every Christian by showing and teaching them how great God’s love is for us. In John Stott’s Book, “Basic Christianity,” he reveals insight on what it is to be a Christian. He also dispels many erroneous teachings that have been brought into the Christian community. Stott states in the beginning of his book that many have held the assumption that God sits on His throne, aloof, distant, and unconcerned for our needs and problems (Stott, pg. 17).
Although Jesus speaks of “an hour [that] is coming, and is now”, Jesus’s words to the woman are in light of the past, the Old Testament. Is it fair that all of Robbie’s hopes and dreams were confiscated because of a 13 year old girl accusing him of a crime that was never proven to be true? In the book Atonement by Ian McEwan Briony is an adolescent in the beginning and does not understand the changes of adulthood. When her cousin Lola comes to her and confesses she has been raped she assumes it was Robbie because of a sexual contented letter she finds that he wrote to her sister.
