Eczema, also known as dermatitis is a very common disease of the integumentary system. Atopic dermatitis(AD) is the most severe and long-lasting form of eczema. It is said that AD affects 10 percent of the world’s population. AD has obvious signs and symptoms, affects various organs, cells, and tissues of the integumentary system, and can be treated but not cured.
The signs and symptoms of AD most commonly include: dry, itchy, scaly skin, cracks behind the ears, and rashes on the cheeks, arms, and legs. It occurs more in children and infants than in the adult population. In infants it commonly affects the scalp, face, and cheeks.
