It all started from the 1600’s where African-American were brought in as slaves in America to do their harsh labors and work for long periods of time. This lead into a societal thing where white Americans believed that black people should be despised, and be discriminated because of their color. This then became even bigger in the society in the 1900’s, when it lead towards to individual colored washrooms, cinemas, bus sections, drinking fountains, etc. An African-American man (Martin Luther King Jr) who thought he should do something about the hatred towards the African-Americans. This novel is about how African-Americans were treated unfairly in the past, especially in the South. Atticus Finch is a lawyer who is given a court case in Alabama to defend a black man (Tom Robinson) who has been accused of raping a white woman. Harper lee uses the plot of the hearing to shine a light on the ugliness of racism/bigotry during that time. Harper Lee wrote this book because of how she thought black people were being treated around the 1930’s period; book being set in 1930’s. Although, the book was written in the 1950’s same problems were still occurring around her. Martin is an activist, also a minister Baptist, who was a leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He is known for his speech “I have a dream”, which is one of the biggest civil speech of America. Luther was trying to deliver the speech on how racism should be ended in the United States, and discrimination affected the lives of African-Americans. Martin most famous boycott was the segregation sectioned bus. He made it illegal on Nov 13, 1956, where the United States supreme court made the decision. This was caused due to fact that Martin and fellow colored Americans were sick of having to give up their seats to white people. This made many white folks be in a rage, and lead to a terrorist act of bombing Martin’s house. Although, this boycott made him become known as the speaker of the Civil Rights Movement (CRM). A common perspective of both Harper and Martin is that they both believed that legal action should happen instead of violent acts. Both believed that violence leads to a road to nowhere. But, Martin also have said that political parties do have problems, and one party isn’t better than the other, but who is more committed wins the race in his point of view.
