From Harper Lee’s iconic book “To Kill a Mockingbird” comes the notion that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. Atticus Finch explains to his daughter Scout in the book that it is wrong to murder a mockingbird because all they do is sing their hearts out for us. It is wrong to hurt mockingbirds since they are defenseless, innocent beings who pose no threat to humans. So in this sense, it would be a sin to kill a mockingbird because the mockingbird has done you no harm or foul. Tom is a black man who is falsely accused of rape by a white woman, and despite Atticus’s best efforts to prove his innocence, he is convicted and ultimately killed. Tom is innocent of the crime he is accused of, and his death represents the injustice of the racial prejudice that is pervasive in the society of the novel. Boo Radley is a recluse who is rumored to be a dangerous and violent person. However, as the story progresses, the reader learns that Boo is actually kind and gentle, leaving presents for Scout and her brother Jem and saving their lives in the end. Boo is a mockingbird because he is innocent of the rumors that surround him and he does no harm to anyone. To harm him would be to destroy something good and pure.
In both cases, killing a mockingbird would represent destroying something innocent and good. Tom Robinson is innocent of the crime he is accused of and only found guilty because of the color of his skin. To kill him would be to destroy a life that did not deserve to be taken.
