The scenario provided, focuses on a student in the fifth grade. Chole is very hard-working student who completes tasks in an efficient manner, and flourishes from a consistent structure academically, as well as socially. Chloe’s only struggle, academically, is her ability to read fluently on a grade appropriate level. Although Chloe can read sight words and can decode a vast amount of multi-syllable words, Chole is unable to to read with tone or expression in a suitable manner. This discovery has supported the decision to implement various strategies to assist Chloe develop her reading fluency, become an expressive reader, and be able to read fifth grade level text in a fluent manner (Paulsen & the IRIS Center, 2004).
1. Student-adult reading To begin assisting Chloe achieve her goal of reading fluently on a fifth-grade level, the strategy of “student- adult reading” (Texas Education Agency, n.d.), will be utilized. This strategy allows Chloe to read one-on-one with the teacher, a paraprofessional, or a tutor if one is available.
