I initially developed an interest in audiology as a professional field when I started watching a television programme involving an audiologists. I started reflecting on the importance of the ability to being able to hear in our psychological development, social interactions, education and every aspect of life. It enriches and enables us to learn and grow and develop social bonds. Having then researched the effect of hearing impairments on patients' lives, I realised the profound impact that even a minor hearing Impairment can have on a person's quality of life and social interactions. I developed my interest by seeking out work experience in an audiology department during my A levels. The ability to empathise and behave professionally is fundamental. Having undertaken half my placements in the private sector and the other half spread across 3 different hospitals, I have gained a diverse range of experience. During my audiology placements, I carried out numerous tasks including : taking a patients history, Puretone audiometry, hearing aid repairs and speech testing and conducting full direct referral appointments. This has allowed me to develop the professional expertise and knowledge and provides a strong platform to pursue audiology as a career ; I am keen to now take the next step. Moreover, during my Boots hearing care placements and during my time working as a hear care manager at an independent audiology clinic I developed an understanding of various hearing aid manufacturers and how their specific technologies could differ.
