Growing up in the Netherlands during World War II, Audrey Hepburn had her mind set on being a dancer when she got older. Using her talent, ballet dancer, Audrey would perform in order to raise money for the Dutch resistance against the German Nazi’s. Soon after moving to London to study at an English school Audrey Hepburn started performing in plays. This led to many directors wanting Ms. Hepburn to try out for their movies in America. After one audition Audrey Hepburn’s career in the film industry took off. Certain movies and great connections landed Audrey Hepburn the title “Most Stylish Woman in America”. At a young age Ms. Hepburn started to take ballet lessons and then used her talent to raise money for the Dutch resistance. Her father, John Hepburn-Ruston, was an Anglo Irish banker, also a Nazi sympathizer. While her mother, Ella Van Heemstra, was a baroness - a Dutch aristocrat. In 1935, Audrey Hepburn’s father left their family. Therefore, this left Audrey and her mother alone in the middle of World War II (BE#7). While living in the Netherlands Germany invaded the borders, causing many people to change their names, this included Audrey’s name. During that time Audrey, adopted the pseudonym Edda Van Heemstra, changing her mothers’ documents to do so because an “English sounding” name was considered dangerous at the time (Audrey, 2016). The name was never a legal name; her name was still Audrey Kathleen Hepburn-Ruston. After the D-Day invasion, the Germans would use all of the Dutch people’s food supply and fuel for themselves. This caused many families to starve, including Ms. Hepburn and her mother. Due to the lack of food Audrey, contracted several health issues caused by malnutrition.
