Good day Mr Albanese, and the senate,
I would like to address the Australian gun laws, and how they should stay exactly how they are. The Australian gun laws are sorted into 6 categories, A, B, C, D, H, and R/E; and all gun handlers are required to sit a written test and receive a license to whichever category is necessary. Australia’s System to receive a gun license is quite the effort including legal documents and a background check as anyone who is unfit to own a firearm like mental illness shouldn’t be able to get their hands on a weapon. This can be considered an ethical issue for Australia as some Australians believe they reserve the right to have possession of a category E firearm, such as a Handgun, to protect themselves, like the US. …show more content…

Therefore, giving Australia less chance and opportunities for mass shootings and killings like Port Arthur. The catholic church teachings don’t exactly explain their views on gun laws, so catholic views can vary on the person, and how they interpret the teachings. There are certain principles that are not explicitly stated but they do state the right of self-defence and defending family or those who live under your care. One of these is “Care for God’s creation”, therefore also showing both sides of this to now kill God’s work, but to also protect it. This is a very contradicting dilemma on behalf of the catholic church, leaving Catholic’s the choice to choose how they decide to stand on the issue. Another Catholic Social Teaching is “Life and Dignity of the human person” which stands non the pro side of the strict gun laws in Australia as well as “Rights and Responsibilities” which can be interpreted to have the right to hold a firearm for protection. Many Christians use the CST’s and the 10 commandments to guide their lives to the right direction under God’s word, and the fact the church give this leniency to decide their views, shows the acceptance that the church
