At the beginning of 20th century, the United States and other countries were prosperous and doing economically well because they were expanding from trade and coming up with innovative technology. America was finally recovering from hardships at the end the 1800s and policies were being created that would help with trade, income, budgets, and anything that would generally make this country better, or so thought. The United States and many other countries started developing new machinery that would help them in future wars including tanks, various kinds of firearms, and toxic gas. On June 28th, 1914, a man from Serbia named Gavrilo Princip, shot and killed the heir to the Austria-Hungary empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, because he wanted to stop the control over Bosnia and Herzegovina. This made the Austro-Hungarian government furious and they sought to destroy Serbia. Before declaring war, Austria- Hungary reached out to see if Germany would stand with them. Russia was going to support Serbia in battle and along with Russia would come its allies, France and Great Britain, so Austria- Hungary wanted to be prepared. On July 28th, exactly a month later, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia after receiving the confirmation that Germany would aid them in war. Within the next couple weeks, every major country in Europe was pitted against one another leading to two major sides of the Great War; The Triple Entente which consisted of Britain, France, Russia, and later the United States; The other side called the Triple Alliance which united Germany, Austria- Hungary, and Italy. Wilson was in office when global trade became an important part of the economic system and he was expanding the market with countries such as Japan and Britain. As the war progressed, the United States continued to ship supplies to countries on both sides, when suddenly Germany’s naval submarines started to sink any ships that were entering British waters and that interfered with German blockade on Britain. When Germany sank the Lusitania killing over 1000 people, 128 of those American, the people of America started to think negatively about Germany and felt that maybe entering the war to put an end to Germany would be a good idea. Furthermore, Germany continued to sink more U.S. ships killing more U.S. civilians. Also, it was rumored that Germany and Mexico would unite as an alliance, and if victory over the United States happened, Mexico would gain back territory in the U.S. ( History.com). When the president heard these rumors, it angered him so much that he went before congress and asked to declare war on Germany in April of 1917, congress approved, and the United States entered World War 1 on April 6th.
