In 1914, the "guns of August" erupted in Europe. Due to the "guns of August", a bloody battle broke out against Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Americans did everything in their power to stay out of this. They believed that the war was horrific, but they saw the war as a conflict between the imperial monarchies. Fast forward to 1916, Woodrow Wilson ran for his second term of presidency. The United States wanted nothing to do with the war, in fact Wilson used the slogan "He kept us out of war." One month after Wilson was re-elected, he turned against his words and asked Congress to declare war on Germany, which resulted in the United States fighting in World War 1. Britain was not happy about the United States using neutral waters, so they began seizing the goods.
