A Midsummer Night’s Dream Summative
A major theme in A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the emotion of love is stronger than the laws of authority figures. In this play, Hermia and Lysander face many obstacles but their love for eachother is eternal so they stand up to the society. Helena and Demetrius hated each other but as time passes by, their love becomes stronger. Hermia truly loves Lysander, not Demetrius but was being forced to marry the man she didn’t love. Demetrius had won her father’s heart and she had to obey him as she was his property. Egeus goes to the king of Athens for help, Theseus. After given three choices, to marry Demetrius, to become a nun and never contact a man, or sentenced to her death, Hermia decided to choose none.

Shes told shes as pretty as Hermia but Hermia had two guys fawning over her. Helena considered an honor to be around Demetrius but he did not love her back, he hated her instead. “And even for that do I love you the more. I am your spaniel. And, Demetrius,The more you beat me, I will fawn on you” (Act 2, Scene 1). She was obsessed with him and considered it an honor for him to treat her like a dog. Demetrius thought differently though. “For I am sick when I do look on thee” (Act 2, Scene 1) He got sick just by looking at her but Helena would do anything to attract Demtrius so she could marry him. Usually the male attracts the female but Helena thinks differently, she just wants him to be in love with her and she’ll do all the work to make that happen. She doesn’t do what society does, she attracts the man instead of the man attracting her. Her love was so strong for Demetrius, she was willing to do something so unusual in society. Demetrius falls in love with Helena in the end and marries her because the love potion was not removed off him.
