Every time I decide to watch the news, there always seems to be a story about an officer of the law shooting an innocent victim. This problem never truly resonated with me until reading an article about “The Myth of Police Reform.” Throughout this editorial there are countless examples of incidences where police intervention should be deemed unnecessary. There are some scenarios where extreme force may be needed, but a majority of them do not. Ta-Nehisi’s editorial supports this, even though it may have a few drawbacks related to the ethos, but he still manages to support his main claim with sufficient logos and pathos.
One common opinion is that officers should not use more force than is necessary or reasonable, and even then, that force should be used only as a last resort. “Police use force to affect civilians’ conduct. On a day-to-day basis, they do so most often by employing the least degree of force available to them, their mere presence. Cops wear uniforms and drive distinctly marked cars so that, without saying a word, they may have an effect on citizens’ behavior” (Fyfe, 38). When an officer’s presence fails to fulfill the desired conduct, the next course of action for said officer would be verbalization.
In a bid to understand the policing and the roles of police officers in a neighborhood that was the criminals and crime activities, the filmmakers Alan Raymond and his wife Susan Raymond had to spend a whopping three months with the policemen of the New York precinct in the South Bronx. The filmmakers were interested in analyzing the activities that took place around crime prone areas and how the police officers did to combat the crimes. Interestingly the choice of their location provided the brewing place for the criminal activities. The three-month filming was condensed into a 90-minute documentary that was called Police Tapes. For example, if you are walking down the street and somebody starts yelling at you. Now if you return and give that person a smack, that would be a use of force, but is it justified? The second power that I am going to evaluate is the amount of force a police officer can use whilst they are arresting a suspect, entering a premises or searching a vehicle. I think that when it comes to an arrest the police must use force as a way of not letting the suspect escape but also to arrest the suspect. If a suspect is using aggressive force against a police officer then then that police officer can use more force to overpower the suspect and get the suspect in a good position where they cannot use any force. If on the other hand the suspect was compliant with the police officer by doing everything they ask, not being abusive or using any force then the police are likely to be more lenient with them and might not even use handcuffs
Those against police reform would say, the police have every right to use force to protect the citizens. This in fact false because an officer shouldn’t be using extensive force to arrest someone. The power that is given to officers shouldn’t be used to hurt civilians who could be innocent of the suspicions that the officer has theorized. No one should be driven to hurt someone only because of race, gender or age. This is also false because police should know how to act in situations that may require communication skills and police officers shouldn’t be using so paranoid that they should everything that moves without a logical reason besides he may have had a hidden gun.
The importance and prevalence of use of force by police is crucial to the community. With the usage of force, there are three forms, which are self-defense, people could use force against specifically such as prison guards, police force (White, 2015). Several law enforcement agencies use the method of TASER as another force option. There are several pros and cons when it comes to talking about TASER (Rappert, 2004). With the advantages with TASER being used, the TASER would attack the attacker without a high potential of killing them.
Law enforcement is ensuring an act of obedience to the law. Police officers often take advantage of enforcing the law and end up using violence when it 's not necessary. According to the Washington post ( 2015 ) every 28 hours an unarmed colored person is killed by a police officer. I think it is time for these and other victims who were treated unjustly by police officers to get justice. These deadly law enforcement incidents must come to an end.
The use of force becomes necessary and is permitted under unambiguous circumstances; for example, self-defense or defending another group or person (Police use of excessive force, 1999). If it is taken a step further it should not be considered excessive force. For example, a 150lbs officer is being challenged by a 300lbs man and the heavy man rushes towards the officer holding something in his hand; the officer shoots him and kills him. That is not should be considered excessive force. The officer was just doing what he was trained to do; assessing the situation, act within the use of force continuum and protect himself, public and the aggressor.
Police officers have the unique ability to be a role model and make an impact in their community. “Despite some recent negative media coverage, police officers go above and beyond the call of duty on a daily basis. They devote their lives to the communities they serve.” I’ve seen this first hand, back in high school I was in my local police explorers and didn’t just learn what they have been taught but I also became friends with the police officers in my post. In my post, we did a lot of volunteering events and at these events we would help people set up or give directions and just give people a hand in anything they needed.
Police officers have been used for a long time and have always been very highly respected and looked up to. That is until recent. Over the past 10 or so years, officers have been ridiculed, scapegoated, discouraged, and most importantly disrespected. 100 years ago, the public supported officers in just about every way they could. It just seems the complete opposite now.
