Introduction
This paper on “Storm Surge: An Autoethnography About Teaching in the Australian Outback” is conducted by Ernst, R. and Vallack, J. in the year 2015 discusses about the grief of an experienced teacher to adapt to the assessment-driven curriculum specified by the Australian Education systems. This teacher is concerned with the implementation of this curriculum that may result in lacking of student-centered learning and intrinsic motivation in the classroom. The students are required to be tested and teachers are required to teach the subject contents to prepare the students for the test. Autoethnography offers therapeutic benefits as when an individual shares and communicates his/her traumatic events, healing will occur. The manifestation of one own experiences will help him/her to heal. Methodological triangulation should be carried out in order for data obtained through autoethnographic to be triangulated or also known as cross checking. Sell-Smith and Lax (2013) have proposed that a blend of quantitative, constructivist and autoethnographic viewpoints will help to make data more in-depth and subsequently autoethnography as a method of research will be perceived as valid. In this case, Piaget’s theory of constructivist learning can be looked into as it is about the teaching methods in education which is in line with the aim of this study. (n.d., 2015). This study can possibly develop into collaborative autoethnography as the teacher is also experiencing what other teachers are experiencing.
