Traumatic Brain Injury Video Analysis

In the 2007 video Living With a Traumatic Brain Injury, four people that suffer from traumatic brain injuries (abbreviated TBI) are filmed and talk about their lives. The video overviewed what had happened with their brains and showed different levels of functionalization in each participant. Not only did the video teach about the lives of people with TBI, how the brain works, and how the information presented can be used in one’s own life but most importantly it taught how remarkably strong and optimistic people suffering from significant life alterations can be. It showed how a positive outlook on a bad situation can not only make life better but also provide motivation to work hard to regain lost abilities.

Introduction The video starts off by introducing the Anita, Brian, Allen, and Zsche. Then it gives an overview of what TBI is and what it does. It states that “TBI can alter an individual’s physical abilities. Even more devastating are the potential personality changes and loss of cognitive skills” (University of Washington, 2007). She describes her life before her TBI as being a hard working “health policy system analyst who worked with a lot of data” and being immensely physically active (University of Washington, 2007). After the car accident, Anita was left with a traumatic brain injury and broken bones in her lower back and pelvis. After some rehabilitation therapy and hard-work, Anita was able to gain back a lot of the physical abilities she had lost. But due to her loss of reading, ability to do math, and keep information in her short-term memory, Anita had to do a lot more rehabilitation work to be able to regain some of her cognitive abilities back.
