It was only a day after Avery’s parents had adopted a girl, and already Avery was sick and tired of her. Her record showed that she was a straight A student, and that she had skipped two grades, and was currently in 7th grade. The girl was only ten years old, and Avery wondered how someone in an orphanage could be so successful, so content with their life. In books and TV shows she had seen orphans live miserable lives, but not Christine. In fact, she had a going away party that the whole staff and kids had been invited to. When she left, she was crying the whole afternoon she arrived at Avery’s house. However, the very next day she let everything go and was happy to finally have a family. Instead she was barely passing 9th grade with low Cs in all of her classes. The day that Christine came back with her first 100, Avery wasn’t so happy, and the praise that her parents gave to her made it even worse. She knew it wasn’t right to be envious of a ten year old girl but she couldn’t stand it. Why did she have to be the one who struggles, walking and slowly progressing, while she ran free, succeeding at everything? All her life Avery had trouble in school and at home. Instead of telling her parents, she decided to walk. Even though Avery was alone, the fear of being alone didn’t get to her. Her hate toward her parents and Christine had been too much for her to feel or even think about anything else. It had only pushed her to become something more. Her final grades had been Cs but a few Bs had come her way, but she felt that something was missing, or rather, something she needed to get rid of.
