In this book, Avi included many themes including freedom. Freedom played a big role, such as in the beginning, Father Quinel was talking to Crispin and telling him to leave the village and find another one and stay there for a year and a day to gain freedom. In reply, Crispin said that freedom had nothing to do with him. That shows that he doesn't think that he deserves freedom, or doesn't even know what it is.
