The Diary of Anne Frank is a novel based off the diary kept by a young Jewish teenager during her family’s struggles through the Holocaust. The story depicts real life events that took place in concentration camps during the Nazi takeover of Holland in the 1940s. Anne Frank records her experience during her hiding in what came to be known as the “Secret Annex”(Frank 26). She tells a vivid story through her writings of how she and her family were able to escape capture over several years during the hostile takeover. Anne writes about her family’s attempt to hold on to their jewish culture, family values, and overall way of life while in hiding and later captivity.Many of Anne’s Jewish culture, values, and way of life was invalidated by her suppressors, …show more content…

The family would go days without eating, and have the constant feeling of being captured. While Anne and her family were in hiding workers from her father’s business helped them out while living in the annex. The workers provided food, clothes, and news of the events happening in the city of Amsterdam (Frank 17). Anne and her family along with the Van Pels attempted to salvage as much of their Jewish traditions as possible. The workers also brought books, newspapers, and magazines for the families to read. Anne expanded her reading while hiding in the annexe. She read the magazine series known as Cinema and Theatre. Although Anne was a Jew she had few experiences with the outside world. During the novel people that were placed in the concentration camps who eventually died or were killed were not buried. As Americans, there are organized ceremonies when burying the deceased. Also, the celebration of holidays between the two cultures differed. In the novel, Anne and her family celebrate St. Nicholas Day/ Hanukkah which is basically Christmas Day for Americans. The Jews have dinner and give gifts to family and friends, the same as Americans. The food the Jews prepare must be “kosher” or “proper”, Foods such as pork and shellfish are not allowed. However, Americans have a wide range of food and are allowed to indulge in any meal or course they choose. Jewish clothing also differed. Jewish men must wear a “kippah” or “skull cap”, while American men are not limited to clothing selections (e.g. MJL Staff, Jewish Clothing, My Jewish Learning). The beauty of Jewish men and women and American men and women also differed. Americans focus is on the beauty of the body and facial features. While Jews have less plastic surgery, Americans believe deeply in this luxury. Also, most women in America rely on makeup to make themselves appear beautiful. Jewish women are applauded for wearing little to no makeup.The differences between the two cultures are currently present and prevalent, however they are still able to intertwine and live in
