The Diary of Anne Frank is a heart throbbing story that Anne Frank wrote in 1942, about herself. A young woman who was emotionally damaged, physically weakened, but socially uplifting through the relationships with the few family and friends that understood what she was going through. While the Nazi’s were occupying Holland the young jewish girl received a diary for her thirteenth birthday. Treating the book like one of her few friends, Anne writes faithful observations about her surroundings describing her wishes and feelings. Her family is eventually sent into hiding to avoid capture from the police of Germany, and the Nazi’s. While reading this diary you felt not only connected to the situation itself, but you felt like you were growing up along with Anne Frank. During the time in the annex, Anne Frank was sixteen years old. At this time she was an adolescent who was directly going into her pubescent stages of development. Anne Frank was in the middle of finding who she truly was as a young woman. She was constantly focused on her appearance. Even without television, or even newspapers during her time in hiding she compared herself very often to her own mother, and siblings. During her time in hiding Anne was constructing who she wanted to be when she was finally able to leave hiding. Puberty is often thought of as the end of childhood. Anne, was going through multiple hormonal changes including developing genital hair, pimples, breasts, and even the need for love in her life. Peter van Daan plays a crucial role in Anne Frank’s coming of age. Anne Frank begins to explore friendship, and the nature of love. Anne even describes in the book that Peter is her “conquest”. After months of getting to know Peter, Anne realizes that Peter was not what she was looking for emotionally, even though she was physically attracted to him.
